Tertiary butyl hydroquinone, also known as tert butylhydroquinone, abbreviated as Antioxidant TBHQ. The Molecular formula is C10H14OP2, and the molecular weight is 166.22.
Function and characteristics:
1. Antioxidant TBHQ is a relatively new phenolic oil soluble antioxidant. Since the approval of TBHQ as a food antioxidant by the US Food and Drug Administration in 1972, it has quickly received attention from peers in many countries due to its high efficiency, safety, and other excellent properties. China also approved the use of TBHQ in 1991 (but not in feed).
2. Compared with common synthetic antioxidants such as BHA, BHT, and PG, Antioxidant TBHQ has significant comprehensive advantages, especially in terms of antioxidant performance, safety, no odor, and no color reaction with metal ions. Numerous experiments have shown that TBHQ has better antioxidant effects on most oils, especially vegetable oils, than BHA, BHT, and PG. Adding 0.02% TBHQ to most vegetable oils results in a protection factor of 3-5, while most other antioxidants have a protection factor below 3.
3. After years of research, it has not been found that Antioxidant TBHQ has carcinogenic, teratogenic, and mutagenic effects. The rats were fed with the feed containing TBHQ for a long time. It was confirmed that TBHQ would not accumulate in the body, but would be metabolized rapidly after absorption by the stomach and intestines, and would be discharged in the urine in the form of Glucuronic acid glycoside conjugates. Therefore, the residue was very low, and only 4~5mg/kg existed in fat at most. The safety of TBHQ has been comprehensively evaluated by FAO/WHO and falls under category A (1) of safety.
4. After adding oil, food, or feed to Antioxidant TBHQ, it will not bring any odor or odor to the product. Under non alkaline conditions, TBHQ does not form colored substances when encountering iron and copper plasma.
5. Antioxidant TBHQ not only has antioxidant effects, but also has good antibacterial effects on both food and feed. 0.02% TBHQ has good bacteriostatic effect on bacteria such as Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Brevibacterium aerogenes, molds such as Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus versicolor, and yeasts such as beer yeast, Pichia pastoris, and Hansen heteromorpha. Sodium chloride has a synergistic effect on TBHQ antibacterial activity.
